Vibe Streamer is looking for people with PSP and PDA's

Heyas people,

I've been thinking for a while about creating a "simple" skin for Vibe Streamer that will be able to run on the PSP and also on PDA's (Pocket PC's).

I need some people that have tried out browsing using the PSP and the PDA's that I can ask a few questions to come up with a nice soultion to how this skin should be created and if the browser on each platform supports the requirements for running Vibe Streamer.

Post a message here if you're interested in participating and answering a few questions about your platform.

I would spend some time creating one, but i recently downgraded from my 2.6 to 1.5, so I dont have that latest firmware with all the fancy flash in it.

I would be well up to the task tho. If someone wants to send me their PSP id be welcome to use it D

I'm not after someone that must create the skin itself since it's just not a skin for the PSP. I'm more after people that own a PSP,PDA, Advanced mobile phone etc, that can help out with providing info and testing so we can come up with the best solution that works on all those portables.

Hehe i would but again I don't have the right firmware so I dont have flash. And my phone is 4 years old (

Darn it.

I have both a PSP and a Dell Axim (with Windows Mobile 2003) and I'd love to help test.

How do you plan to enable directory browsing on the PSP (a device with essentially no 'mouse' per se)?

I have a Palm Treo 700w that has EVDO internet access which is a prime choice for streaming Vibe. I have tried Vibe on 4 different web browsers, PIE, PIE plus, Opera, and Netfront. Neither of them allow the shared folders to be seen and the formatting of the Vibe page in a 240 x 240 square window is not very good either.

What is preventig the shared folder view from being seen? Netfront claims to have Javascript and Adobe just released flash 7 for PocketPC and WM5.

If this can be done, it would be great!

Amish

On the shared folders bit in Vibe right click the folder, and press edit. Then tick the names of the users who are permitted to see it D

I am also happy to help out,

I have a Treo 650 (palm)
This would be a great option to have so I don't have to transfer my daily podcasts to my SD card. I could just stream them.

Gloonet does this already but couldn't fast forward to the point I left off from the last time I listened. Had to listen to the entire podcast over again. Please include a fast forward/rewind feature in the palm version of Vibe!

Thanks

Hey, I have a Sony Clie TH55 (Palm).
Right now, the buld ind Browser (NetFront 3.1) doesn't show the whole interface. A lot of thing are missing, so that streaming doesn't work.
I would be happy to help you build a new skin.

I tested it in my LAN over Wireless and got the page opened well but I can't play any track, maybe it is an issue with the flash -(

Ok people...

I've got a question and please only answer if you know the answer or if you have a vague idea ) And please state what portable, what OS and version your have and any info I might need in order to puzzle together your answer )

QUESTION 1
I'd like to know a bit if anyone know about the Java capabilities of your portable. That means, can it support Java? And if you know, what edition of Java does it support. The portables I'm interested in are

* PSP
* NDS
* Mobile Phones (Well, I guess all of them run Java Micro Edition, or am I wrong?)
* PDA's (Pocket PC etc...)

QUESTION 2
This one is for mobile phone users/PDA users only. How are your connections, I know myself that my mobile couldn't stream squat from the internet using my mobile connection ). A better question to ask might instead be, can you, and how fast would you download a 10mb file from your mobile phone/PDA and what connection to you use?

Ahwell, I've got a few ideas and any answers and info would help out a lot.

Nokia 770 (PDA - Internet Tablet)

Does NOT support Java, only Flash (I think Flash 6)

ZipperSeven

24-07-2006 16:57:33

Most Sony Ericsson mobile phones support java...both my old T616 and my current Z520a do, although I dont have a data plan on it.

As far as I know, there's no Java support with the PSP, even with the most recent firmware. Flash support in the newest f/w, but that's it.

As far as connectivity, most of the places I'd be using VS I'd have 802.11b access at least. I *can* pair my Axim to my phone over Bluetooth but streaming several megs of music would cost me a small fortune. The slow point for streaming is the upstream @ the server, on my Comcast plan, thats 768 kb/s, so 802.11b even with only a 2 mb/s signal is acceptable.

I used to stream w/ Shoutcast to my Axim w/ GSPlayer so that I could stream audio thru the house, worked great but Shoutcast is a bit finicky at times.

Edit...forgot to say that there's no out-of-the-box Java for PocketPC's (that I know of, correct me if I'm wrong.) My understanding is that you have to purchase a license, and then there's still a bit of hackery involved to get it to work.

ive got an Acer N50, in IE it shows the page ok but no folders, in Minimo it doesnt seem to scroll, all i get is the top bar, i tried with other websites and i get a scroll function - any ideas?

I've got a Palm T|X. I don't think it supports Flash (which really sucks). I've got the IBM Java VM J9 2.2 ARM (20040706_1505_IHsCmV) installed but honestly don't know if it's accessible to the browser itself. The browser is Blazer 4.3.

As for the connection, I only use it when there's a wireless network connection around (802.11b) as it has a b card integrated. I can download a 10meg file in about 30 seconds depending on how good the signal is. All in all, not bad. Currently, I use Shoutcast and listen to streams that way (via the internet or through a local shoutcast server i run from my PC).

Thanks for Vibestreamer - great app and can't wait until more skins start appearing.

Hi,

Just found Vibestreamer last week - AWESOME app! its the answer to gnump3d2 on windows !!

I am MORE than up for beta-testing on various pocket pc PDAs

My own PDA Dell axim X51V with windows mobile 5

presently access to numerous other wifi / bluetooth / GPRS based phone/PDAs.

On my X51V I can see the page layout (in certain screen modes) but not the music icons.

Apparently, this version of Java runs on the X51V

Also I gather flash 7 is windows mobile 5 compatible now

Hey there,

I've been playing around a bit with Midlets and I'd like to test a few things. Can you people with PDA's look up on how you can run java midlets on your system. I have no possibilities myself to try it out outside the emulator so I need someone that can try out to run a midlet from a PDA to see if this works.

Read here for some details for you PPC users

first of all - awesome application! - very clean, very light and very cool!

I own a HTC TyTN which runs WM5 - running java MIDlets is no issue on these devices (I don't think it is on any ppc?)

As for bandwidth I've got 3G - clocked at 1Mbit tops so far (but with hsdpa apparently capable of up to 3.6 mbit)

I'm well up for testing midlets - if you still need the help!

Keep up the good work D

First I would like to say fantastic job on this... Best seen so far.

I would love for help out with the testing for PSP and mobile devices.

I have
PSP on 1.5/2.6 FW
Mobile Nokia N80
PDA using 2002.

I have one question. since you are possibly creating accessibilty for the the folowing devices, here is a word of thought. How are you going to handle individual access list per user. Example.

User x logs into Vibestreamer on PC plays x music. He then logs off and uses his PSP or Mobile device with the same user credentials. How are you going to differentiate between the different OS's and which skin to load for the user.

I don't need to have the answer.... it was just a thought for you...

PS for the Nokia N80 the devices allow flash however it becomes a static flash file when loaded.

just found this string and would love to help,

Axim X51v WM5 with a VGA Display
Motorola V3xx With 3G and a QVGA display

I'd love to help out with this, I'm excited to see phones coming out that I think could handle this, the new Moto V3xx Has a 3G 3.6Mbps internet connection, a qvga 240x320 display with a Nvidia Goforce 4800 graphics card, it uses opera mini as it's default web browser.

This is the first phone I have seen that I think can accomplish steaming however I don't know if they have a version of flash that will run on a motorola device. I'd love to help create a functional skin for it or for a pocket pc.

I can help. I have SamSung Blackjack that runs WM5. It can do java apps, though the java midlets are generally speaking not nearly as cool as native Wm5 apps, but I digress...

I have 3G on cingular.

Love Vibe streamer, just found it. Wow. if I could listen from my phone would be awesome.

Another thing you guys might consider is using a web services API so that 3rd party developers can write a dedicated client on any platform they want. Just a suggestion.

If you have a java client, I'd love to try it out.

And also, I will try this software if it works with the PS3.
So far, I'm only in luck with 1 software. (not too great streaming MP3s)
I hope Vibe Streamer can do a better job.

Ill run some tests tonight.

EDIT.

Well ive tested and yes the PSP does stream, wooo.....but it wont stream the music as, you get the "There is not enough memory". This is due to the fact that, while loading the song it loades in in temperary files and thus does not have the space to do so.... so as of now on the PSP its out.

I just tried vibestream using an AT&T/Cingular Motorola 8525 and got some interesting results.

I could access the html page that was emulating my hard drive, my username and password worked, but I did get a short error message that said something to the effect that Macromedia Flash-Lite 2.1 was the only version available. This phone uses Windows Mobile 5.0. In any case, the Vibestream html default skin showed up, but I could not see my songs, or play. None of the normal buttons or menus were available...

I'm assuming that this phone, and others like it, would need a plugin to run Vibestream. Or perhaps the emulator on the local HD needs to be able to adapt to the various mobile device java and flash formats.

Let me know if anyone else has tried this with any success. Ideally I'd like someone to post a new thread about smart phones that work with vibecast.

there are 2 options for getting Vibe streamer to work on Windows Mobile.
Both Require that a secondary Flash language(flash 7 for PPC) be used but it will not require a total rewrite of Vibestreamer, all you have to do is create a PPC Flash app that uses Flash remote to connect to the remote videstreamer server and loads the requiered files from there now there are 2 ways you can setup the Flash remote the first being the most logical and most stable and easiest to use but hardest to program, what you would need to do is basicly make the Flash Remote code write itself after a few questions are asked, the basics Server & port this way allows for multiple servers and ports to be accessed from one Application, the second method would be to build in a autopopulation program that generates the application on the host machine but that its self can cuase issues if it only sees your router and not your WAN IP

It's all good, no harm done!...

I think the author's main focus was the new feature and improving from previous version (VS server, Web GUI, Skin + other options). Beside, i'm not sure if mobile phone will download/stream mp3 fast as computer especially when each file are over 4MB.... (wifi phone maybe be exceptional) I don't have the tools to try out... but HEY!! now that we brought attention to this thread.... people out there who experimented will share their findings! I'd gladly volunteer my assistance in testing support for mobile devices. Personally I have an HTC Desire running Google Android v2.2. Not sure which browser it is using (the application is just called "Internet" but it's a good bet that it's an implementation of Google Chrome.

The problem I have (as posted by others previously) is that tapping on the album folders does nothing.

I do feel this would be a very worthwhile project given the increase in availability of WiFi Hotspots providing far better bandwidth than the 3G mobile network.
