need a little help configuring Vibe

I installed vibe streamer, I have a user and group setup - I'm having trouble accessing/testing it from another PC on my router. I saw there are special considerations if I'm behind a router (which I am) and need to set up 'port forwarding' - I have np idea how to do this... can you point me in the right direction

I used 0.0.0.0 as an IP - I would like to have outside users access the mp3s

thanks,

Jamie

In order to make your Vibe collection visible to users outside your network, you can check these steps first

1. In vibe- Settings - Server, ( where you typed 0.0.0.0 ) specify a port for example 45100 ( or if you prefer using SSL, default port for that is 443).

2. Open that port you have choosen in your router, important to specify what internal IP, Local ip address (192.168.x.x) the device which hosts the VibeServer have. Use port forward, depending on what router you have, Brand, version etc the set up may differ, but as guideline you can read more about portforward on your router here.
[url2bvml4i5]http://www.portforward.com[/url2bvml4i5]

3. Restart Router ( just to make sure the settings are set)

4. Dont know you External IP? go here --> [url2bvml4i5]http://www.whatsmyip.org/[/url2bvml4i5] You´ll see your address at top page.

5. Friends who will connect to you must use your External IP as
[u2bvml4i5]http//[/u2bvml4i5] nr.nr.nr.nr portnr (which youve choosen in step 1,2)
or when using SSL
[u2bvml4i5]https//[/u2bvml4i5] nr.nr.nr.nr (you wont need to type portnr when using ssl)

However if you are using more than one computer at home, i think the safest way to make this work everytime your friends wants to use your vibe, would be to "hard-set" an internal IP on the computer that host the Vibeserver (using the same ip as previous has already been assigned in the router with a certain portnr)

thanks for the reply Silvr,

I can now access vibe from my local network but not from my external ip address - it seems I'm still missing something

I'm not sure how vibe works - I have a list of mp3s that show up under shares but I can't seem to get any tunes to play

How do you access Vibe from outside your network, or try to access?
( have you done the change in the Router ?)

Hi Silvr,

I found I can get my mp3s to play using IE but not on Firefox

Yes, I set up the router - this is what I did
in vibe settings, I entered the port number 8081 - I made another attempt using port 45100 - I also assigned an internal ip address - I tried several ips 192.168.1.111 and 192.168.1.110

I configured the router to open port 8081 (or 45100) with portforward and port trigger

I found my external IP and tried using it but could not connect

If I can just get connected I think Vibe will provide 90% of what I'm looking for!

Hi Jamie

When you are trying to connect from the outside, do you put [u2anls9m1]http//[/u2anls9m1] infront of your external ip address, this might help )
Let´s assume your ip is 10.10.10.10, (and youre not using SSL) then for you to establish an external connection, you would have to type http//10.10.10.108081 (or what portnumber youve previous assigned with that computer that hosts the vibesever)

What you may have in mind is that the internal ip ( if you are having more than one computer on the network) can change from one start to another, safes way to solve this is to "hard-set" the internal IP you would like to use( 192.168.x.x) on that Vibeserver computer .This is not likley to happen..but it could, and then you know what to check( and change to the proper settings in router) wink

Vibe is exactly what you are looking for, i have tried alot different Mediastreamers and Vibe is the most user friendly but yet most "secure" for you and your friends to access your music from outside

If your saying it worked with IE and not Firefox, make sure you have flash working correctly. I would try changing the port to 80 but make sure your not running any web servers. Reason for port 80 is that websites uses port 80 as default port. In most external and enterprise network they commonly block most of the port expect 80, 443 etc... so give it a try and let us know....... PS forward port 80 on your router too and leave 0.0.0.0 as the ip address in the server setting in VS

hello my helpful friends - here's an update...

After several Flash update attempts, I am now able to play music on Firefox! I don't know why it was so difficult but apparently there are some issues with Firefox and lingering older versions of Flash. I don't know why my last attempt worked, I'm just glad it did!

I continue to have no access from my external IP - I'm using port 8090 - I've tried a bunch of other port no# with no success. I use http//69.xx.xxx.xxx8090 (whatever my current IP is at the moment). I seem to have the router set correctly. I called tech support at Linksys and they say my WRT54G does not support external IP access... ie, trying to use my PC as a server. They say I need a VPN router. Do all of you have VPN routers? Are there any other options? Any VPN router recommendations?

thanks for all the help

Jamie, Linksys is wrong!! they want you to spend money buying their new product, I myself using WRT54G too and I'm able to use VS externally. All i did was bypass TCP port and used DynDNS.com to convert my dynamic ip address to something I can easily remember, changed the port on my VS server config and boom!

Would there be a chance that your ip address is changing frequently? Why don't you post screen shot of your port config in your router and VS server. Maybe will give us a better understanding of why it's not working external for you. PS i would check firewall too.

Hi Thiru06,

I believe you! I setup a free account with DynDNS - I used http//jamie101.homeip.net/

I'm so close - thanks to your help!

I set my router to use DDNS and the status is successful.

My IP doesn't change to often.

I checked my XP firewall - I have 2 settings and I'm not sure about this I opened a port (8090) which is what VS is set to and I have program opened for vibestreamer.exe - both entries have a scope of 'any computer including those on the internet'

As a test, I turned the firewall off and tried accessing VS using http//jamie101.homeip.net8090/ (is this the way to access VS?)

so, I don't think my problem is with the firewall

I'm not sure how to bypass the TCP port - I am using DDNS - VS is currently set to 0.0.0.0 with port 8090

thanks for not giving up on me - I'm feeling a bit dense on all this network stuff - hopefully I'll be able to help someone in the future

Jamie, I just visited the link you've posted (http//jamie101.homeip.net8090/) ..... IT'S WORKING PAL! It brought me to the login screen, if you wanna create me an test user, i can login and test it for you to see if it's all working good.

My understanding of your situation is that.... from your internal network your going http//jamie101.homeip.net8090/ and it's returning result as not found.... this sort of thing happen to me too but not sure why.... my workaround was to just enter my computer name as "http//computername/" and or http//127.0.0.1" but never-less your website is working.....

WOW!!!!!!!! thanks again for all your help! I have been trying to access via the same computer...

I set up a user - bside
and password - recording

I teach music from my home studio bass, drums, and guitar. I organize recording projects with them. Most of the mp3s are done by kids that don't know each other! Some of the tracks are very good, some are very good considering they're 9 or 10 years old. All of them represent tremendous effort and practice and fun!

Now, I'm going to try to modify some stuff - the forum is full of great ideas!

thanks again - you made my day!

Hi,

I'm trying to use my dyndns.org account and port 8082

I've created a service in my router called Vibe set to port 8082
I've created a rule in my router to forward port 8082 traffic to my media machine's internal IP of 192.168.0.3

In the Vibe Streamer GUI Settings window I use
Address http//worldviz.dyndns.org
Port 8082
UPnP Settings ~unchecked~
Max Connected Sessions 10
Session Timeout 45 (seconds)

I've indexed to folders of tunes

I've added myself as an admin user and created a password

When I save settings and click "start" in Vibe Streamer I get the following error lines
An error occured. Please check the server log file for details.
Server could not be started - Invalid connector
Server stopped.

I have Jinzora and Ampache also on my computer as music servers on Port 8081 (both on port 8081)

Please let me know what other info would be helpful in diagnosing my situation.

Thanks)

I didn't mention, I'm not using SSL.
I also don't know what the advantage is to using SSL.

Hello BeeSB,

don't put your dyndns.org account in "vibe streamer server settings address. Change it back to "0.0.0.0" because ip-to-dynamic name convert occurs in your router.

After changing try visiting http//127.0.0.18082 on the same computer where VS is installed. Alternatively you can also try http//yourcomputernameVSinstalled8082 ... 8.0.38082) on any other computers that are on your network.

Try visiting http//worldviz.dyndns.org8082 form an external site (I just tested it was working).

Changed to 0.0.0.0 and port to 8082, that worked.

I guess all the dyndns stuff is taken care of between dyndns and my router.

I guess im in the right direction in solving my intermittent problem with VS. If only I could understand the what those numbers you posted represent or how do I go about changing mine into something like those that oyu posted.
