What is the purpose of the allow caching option added in version 3.0.1? This obviously allows caching, but wasn't this done by default in previous versions?

Yes it was. In Vibe Streamer 2 it always allowed caching.. that was more or less a feature I didn't even add on purpose. In Vibe Streamer 3 I decided to not allow caching on the client since a track that is played from cache won't be registered on the server.... so if you really want caching, it's now an option.
Thanks for the explanation.

Does this also mean that a song played from cache wont be registered in Last.fm?

No it should still be scrobbled, last.fm reacts on events from the player. The statistics though, only reacts on actual data transferred from the server.
