Trouble with port forwarding and such...

Hi.
I'm using Verizon DSL with a Westell 6100 router.
I login to my configuration page, and define the custom service like the Port Forwarding site says, and all goes smoothly, until I go to enable the service and this comes up
[img3f52mbty]http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e68/death_list5/error.jpg[/img3f52mbty]

I can't connect to the outside, and I've tried different ports and everything, and my only guess is that this has something to do with it.
I get the error message when I try to put my external IP in that bottom box there on the Enable Service screen.
I was able to easily open ports for SoulSeek and other programs that I use, I have no idea what my problem could be.
Any help?
Am I just missing some big obvious step or something?

EDIT I didn't realize that the image would auto-resize.
Sorry.
The message says
<192.168.1.1>
Address is not part of the Private Subnet.

I've found one other person with a similar problem here

But I can't piece together what to do from the response he got.

Like almost everyone out there, I too have probs whenever using port forwarding on a router. I bet even the top computer experts have these probs too. P

Anyway, first thing you need to determine is your computer's IP and the port you want to open. After you've figured out those two, then head over to this site and follow it's step-by-step walkthrough [url20a233c4]http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Westell/Westell6100/Icecast.htm[/url20a233c4]

In that above link, the example was for IceCast software. The same steps to port forward most software is the same, but just to be on the safe side I found an example which is the most closely related to the software we're using. Now, where it says ServiceName or IceCast1, enter VibeStreamer. Enter your port number (I use 80, for example) and then select TCP. Save you settings. I think that's all. Hope it works for you. Be sure to come back here and let us know.

Right, I know how to do that.
But after I've define my custom service, I go to enable it.
And then the popup comes that says
your-27e1513d96
or specify

So I go to specify my external IP address, and I get that error message that I talked about in my first post.

There should be no setting in any router which asks for your EXTERNAL IP address. Routers only monitor INTERNAL IP addresses.

but if i only use my internal IP address, then will anyone else be able to see it?

Nono the internal ip address only tell whe packets for port 8081 will go to your computer.

Listen to episode 3 of the podcast about Routers, it explains it well.

well i was told that this
http//192.168.1.4780/

was linking to my internal IP address, because I'm the only person that it would work for.

so i went to whatismyip.com and tried this one out
http//70.16.48.5380/

and that one dosen't work for anybody at all either.
all this confusion makes me miss dial up.
just a little bit.

The IP address 192.168.1.47 [b3fd9dhdt]is[/b3fd9dhdt] your internal IP address. It's not linking to anything. It is to be link to by your external address, which is 70.16.48.53. This link is done via port forwarding by your router. It'll will port forward (or create a link, if you will) through port number 80.

The internal IP address URL (ie. http//192.168.1.4780/) is only to be used if the server is located on the local area network. Thus, any computer in your home including your own must use that IP to access your Vibe Streamer. The external IP address URL (ie. http//70.16.48.5380/) is to be used by anyone else in the world who wishes to connect to your PC. You must set the settings in your router to link that IP address, when used at port 80, to your PC's address.

Check to see that all firewall software is disabled.

Check to see if you've forwarded the right port number.

Check to see if you're forwarding to the correct internal IP address (Check the status of your network card or use ipconfig under DOS).

hmmm...well
when i put my internal address in that little box (as i described in my first post) I didn't get any error messages.
but alas, it's still not working.
i've done everything people have suggested, i just don't get what's wrong.

Can you get Vibestreamer to work internally?

Amish

I woudl say install VNC and ill do it for you but that requires port forwarding.

Yes.

And I did port forwarding for SoulSeek, so maybe that VNC thing would work.
